Flextight Scans
Not to be confused with a drum scanner, the Hasselblad Flextight X5 is the easiest, fastest and best quality scanner of recent times. Our Flextight X5 produces crystal clear, high resolution scans for all film formats between 35mm and 4x5”. Unless requested otherwise, our Flextight finished and raw scans are supplied as 16 Bit 300DPI files in either ProPhoto RGB or Adobe RGB (1998) colourspace. We can scan to any other colourspace of your choice and files can be supplied in 8 Bit on request.
Drum Scans
High Res is the only studio in Australia to offer Drum Scanning on this scale. We have 3 Heidelberg Drum Scanners; a Primescan 8200, 7100 and a Tango.
Drum scanning involves mounting a film negative suspended in Optical Fluid onto an acrylic ‘drum’. It is then placed into the drum scanner, which spins at a high rate to produce the scan.
Due to the labour intensive aspect of this service, we only recommend drum scanning for large format film, large format printing, or if you need to retain the film rebate.

Flextight Scans: Turnaround depends on the size and complexity of the job, however our usual turnaround is 4-6 days.
Drum Scans: The minimum turnaround time for a raw drum-scan is two weeks from the date we receive your film. This is subject to change and larger batches of film will require significant additional time. Contact us for our current turnaround time in order to ensure we can meet your deadline.

In our experience, both our Heidelberg Drum Scanners or Flextight X5 deliver a fine detailed scan with a full range of tones and excellent colour rendition.
The main difference: The two main differences between Drum scans and Flextight scans are that Drum scans can include all of a film rebate if required, and that for film formats larger than 35mm they offer significantly higher resolutions than Flextight scanners can produce. For crucial images Drum scans can offer a cleaner and smoother image in many circumstances and the fluid mounting process can help minimise dust and scratches on older film.
The benefits of a drum scan is incrementally more visible from medium formats (6x4.5, 6x7, 6x9 and so on) all the way up to large formats (4x5, 5x7, 8x10, 11x14).
On the other hand, the Flextight X5 is a significantly faster and easier scanner to use, making it more cost effective and a good choice for the average film user.
The bottom line: We'd recommend that if your scan is either from a 35mm, intended for web use or won't be printed longer than 80cm - choose a Flextight X5 scan. On the other hand, if your scan is from a film format larger than 4x5", requires rebates included, will be printed longer than 80cm or if your goal is simply to have the largest scan available - choose a Heidelberg Drum Scan.

Finished Scans are spotted for any imperfections such as dust, which can settle on your film when scanned. The colour and density of the image will also be corrected, leaving you with a ‘finished’ scan that is ready for printing or web display. It is best to send us an image reference of how you would like your scan to look in terms of colour and density. Removal of any significant scratches or damage to the film will incur a small retouching fee.
RAW Scans are supplied without spotting and are only colour corrected in the scanning software. The main goal of a RAW scan is to maintain as much highlight and shadow detail that is present in the film. This workflow results in a generally ‘flatter’ looking scan, which gives photographers the flexibility of making their own final colour and density adjustments for print.
All scanners and software perform differently and will give you different results. While there are some film profile presets you can use, ultimately it is up to the scanner operator to dictate the final tone and colour of the scans.

We are able to scan film rebates on our Heidelberg Drum Scanners, if requested. Unfortunately, we can't scan rebates on the Flextight X5 due to the design of it's film holders.
DRUM SCAN FAQS
-
Nominal print size is the equivalent of a full-res scan at 300dpi, without interpolation. These dimensions should serve as a guide only. Drum-scans offer incredible detail and are often enlarged beyond their nominal print size with excellent results.
-
Please specify if you would like rebates included. Drum scans will be provided without a rebate by default.
-
Our minimum order amount for a drum-scan is $100 incl. GST. Drum-scanning is a material and labour intensive process and this amount ensures we cover our service costs.
-
Film Strips: Please cut out your individual frames from a film strip. If you prefer to keep your strip as a whole, an additional 25% fee will be added to your order.

This is quite a subjective question, as the answer lies in how much scanning experience you have, the condition of your film and the film types. For example, black and white scanning is much faster than colour.
As a guide, we typically spend about 10-15 minutes setting up the first scan, and then if the rest of the film is of a similar nature, it takes about 3-4 minutes to load and scan each frame.
If you are focused on speed, we would recommend scanning with the 3F function, which allows you to make corrections at home at your own convenience. This allows for a much higher volume of scans than scanning straight to TIFF.

Please bring a Hard Drive or USB to copy your files to. It also goes without saying, but don’t forget to bring your film!
