ARTWORK REPRODUCTION
ARTWORK REPRODUCTION AT HIGH RES
High Res has been reproducing art for over 45 years and works with Australia's top artists, museums, galleries and institutions to provide high quality, colour accurate digital files and archival prints.
Here in our specialised studio, we mount your artwork on our counterweight easel and light it using Broncolor lighting equipment and cross-polarisation. We use the highest quality lenses and cameras to copy artworks for any size up to 300 x 500cm. Using this method we can enhance or reduce texture, eliminate shine, and we can even photograph your artwork framed behind glass.
We can reproduce almost any artwork of any size and medium - we can take the smallest of artworks up to sizes large enough for wallpaper and beyond.
For specific projects, we use customised stitching technology and multiple frames - in 2022 we reproduced an artwork for the National Gallery of Australia with a native resolution of 10,000 megapixels and with a final file size of 78 gigabytes.
We use a variety of lighting techniques to produce the best interpretation of an artwork. Our standard lighting uses 1x 1 metre sized polarising filters over our Broncolor light sources with a crossed polarising filter on the camera. This is varied to whatever extent is required to help achieve accurate reproductions and minimise light reflections – essential for the reproduction of oil paintings. Heavily textured works, works with foils or metallic elements may often require variations or combinations of copying techniques to accurately represent the work, this is something we specialise in.
Apart from the quality of our scanning and printing, many artists particularly enjoy that the fact that we can copy the artwork, prepare the file and print it in the one premises. We have a wide range of paper and canvas stocks. We copy paintings of all sizes, editioned prints can be smaller or larger than the original work (our largest archival stocks are 1620mm rolls).
We produce limited edition prints for many artists and major galleries and institutions. Depending upon which materials an artist has worked with, our prints are often more stable than their originals. Some artists often only sell our prints and not their original works.
We also do digital restoration – often in collaboration with Australia’s leading art restorers.
We can manage your prints, hand deckle edges, ship, emboss etc as per your requirements.

It sold for an Australian auction record of $6.1 million.
The Process
-
Book an appointment to visit our studio so we can see your artwork and discuss your needs. We will give recommendations about the paper, size and intended output. You then leave the artwork in our secure studio to begin the process.
-
In our in-house studio, we mount your artwork on our handmade counterweight easel & light it with a range of professional lights. We use cross polarisation to remove any glare from shiny mediums, meaning we can even reproduce artworks framed behind glass. We photograph the work using the highest quality combination of specialised lenses, digital backs and cameras. We are constantly assessing and adjusting the lights to suit each individual piece of art that comes into the studio.
-
We take the RAW file from the camera to our computers and begin the colour correction process. We use a GTI Graphiclite customised Print Viewing Station, a daylight balanced lightsource that we use to compare the original to our screens. If we are making prints from the work, we will make a series of test prints, continually tweaking the tone and colour until we are satisfied it matches the original. We then invite you to return to the studio to view the test print, and make any revisions together at the computer.
-
When the print file is ready, we can make as many prints as you want, at any time you want. We keep all print files in our vast archive, ready to be ordered at a moment's notice. We also provide you with your own copy of the digital file for your own archive.
Pricing
-
While we endeavour to correct the colour and tone as close to your artworks as possible, sometimes an artist may want an extra high level of care applied to their reproductions. As such we have introduced a revisions fee, meaning you can control how much extra time we spend on your files.
First 15 minutes of revisions are free, and then it's $30 for every 15 minutes after that. For any extreme corrections we will craft a custom quote for you.
We find that the most efficient way to make revisions is by booking an appointment to come into the studio so you can view your files on our calibrated monitors and compare to your artworks under our daylight balanced display lights. This way we can work side by side to make your artworks shine to their full potential.
